The Central Library in downtown Los Angeles has unveiled a colossal pop-up book, Luceros y Penumbras, which is set to challenge the world record for size. This extraordinary creation, spanning 31 feet in width and over 11 feet in height, weighs a staggering 1,800 pounds. The book's intricate design and immense scale are a testament to the collaborative efforts of artist Daniel González and paper engineer Matthew Reinhart, along with a dedicated team of over 30 individuals. The project, commissioned by the Library Foundation of Los Angeles, is a celebration of the Central Library's centennial and draws inspiration from González's childhood experiences at the library and his family's heritage in Mexico.
Luceros y Penumbras, translating to 'starlight and shadows', is a visually rich narrative that combines González's personal history with his family's stories. The book's design is a result of meticulous craftsmanship, with González sketching and carving images into linoleum, printing them with ink, and digitizing them to add color and detail. Reinhart, the paper engineer, played a crucial role in translating these images into a three-dimensional masterpiece. The construction process involved a team of at least a dozen people using giant poles with cushions to turn the pages, ensuring the book's massive size could be fully appreciated.
The book's content is a reflection of González's relationship with the library and his family's traditions. It includes references to the stars and creatures that his grandmother, Isabel Gómez, told him about, symbolizing the passing of knowledge through generations. The sea turtle at the base of the tree, for instance, connects to the San Gabriel River's ecosystem and the Gabrielino-Tongva Tribe's stories about earthquakes. Other symbols, such as the star, Quetzalcoatl, and the owl, further enrich the narrative, inviting viewers to create their own interpretations.
González's goal with Luceros y Penumbras is to inspire curiosity and personal exploration.
